Stecher Lithograph Company
Rochester, NY
.
A short company history of the Stecher Lithographic Company is found in volume XXXV (1982) of the University of Rochester LIbrary Bulletin, in an article entitled “Nineteenth Century Rochester Fruit and Flower Plates” by Karl Sanford Kabelac. The article is available online at the University of Rochester‘s River Campus Libraries website, posted by the Department of Rare Books, Special Collections and Preservation. Scroll nearly halfway down the webpage for the section about The Stecher Lithographic Company. Although the focus of the article pertains to printers in the Rochester, New York area who made plates (prints) of fruits and flowers to illustrate the catalogues of the botanical offerings of local nurseries, the Stecher Lithographic Company also printed numerous postcards during the golden age of postcards. Wikipedia mentions that Frances Brundage illustrated for the Stecher Lithographic Company, although the entry does not specifically state that she illustrated postcards for Stecher, which also printed illutrated books.

Adolph Nolte & Company, founded in 1867, was a lithographic firm that produced posters for seed companies. After Nolte’s interests refocused on the Rochester Beobachter, a newspaper he founded, he sold his lithographic shop to F. Muntz in 1871. Muntz partnered with the printer Frank Stecher who ran the shop, and Anton Rahn who became manager of the art department. Charles F. Mensing bought out Muntz’s share of the firm in 1875, and the name changed from Charles F. Muntz & Co. to Mensing, Rahn & Stecher. Two years later it became Mesning & Stecher after Rahn left to form his own shop. Stecher gained sole control in 1887 and the firm was renamed the Stecher Lithographic Company. They became a major printer of chromolithographic posters, labels and trade cards, and by the turn of the century, artist drawn holiday postcards. In 1936 the Traung Lithographic Company purchased this firm and it became Stecher-Traung. It was purchased again in 1966 by the Schmidt Lithographic Co. to become Stecher-Traung-Schmidt, but they went out of business in 1994.

"More than one version was issued for some of the Stecher series. This can be determined because the publisher used a variety of logos. My cards have “J.E.P.” above the tiny circle logo with a “C” and a dot inside; this was placed in the lower-left corner of the front. The initials are for the artist James E. Pitts, whose name appears on the opposite side. Another printing omitted the artist and changed the logo by abbreviating their name (“Stecher Lith Co. Roch N.Y.”) to surround the circled-and-dotted C."     www.antiquetrader.com
