Farini

May L. Farini
(May Julia Sidonie “Lulu” Farini Lent)

May was born in London, England in August of 1877. Her memory of England was quite vague with recollections of visits to art galleries, a few glimpses of the late Queen Victoria, feeding the swans in Hyde Park. This along with vivid impressions of the work of Gustave Dore remained with her of this early period of her life.

In 1886 her home was in Bridgeport, Connecticut where she was educated and grew to love art and literature. In the winter of 1896 Miss Farini pursued her art education in the studio of Henry Mosler in Carnegie Hall, New York. In July of  that year she joined Mosler’s summer class in Margaretville in the Catskills.

Although he was not a professional artist May’s father, Louis Farini had studied in his youth in the studio of George F. Watts, R. A. He was a photographer for motion pictures.

Her artworks include well-drawn maidens, charming cupids with an instinctive feeling for youth and beauty. She is also known for her cards of women at work and at play: depicting them with tennis rackets, fishing poles, guns, dogs and horses. She showed women in the Golden Age of Postcards in everyday life as well as visions of loveliness.

On April 23 1912 she married Charles Fletcher Lent in Manhattan, New York. They had one child, Edith May Lent. May Farini Lent died November 30, 1961 in Hillsdale, New York.

In 1901 May Farini was interviewed for the Detroit Monthly magazine.
